The photo is going to compensate and make it appear brighter than it is. Which is why it's easier to say it's around the darkness of the Kindles that don't have lights (probably slightly worse). There's no question it's much darker than a modern eReader. Because of this, for example, the "screensavers" are much more muted than the same image on a b&w eReader. It makes the concept of seeing covers in color on the lock screen not as "exciting" as they should be.
Is it acceptable? Yes; I can easily read in the house with decent room lights and its light off. But if I want to do that, my Oasis is a much better option.
