In order to be able to use Download & Transfer via USB, you need a pre-2024 Kindle registered to your account. However, you can buy ePub eBooks from somewhere else. But if they have DRM, you'd need ADE, calibre, and the DeDRM plugin. Also you would need an Adobe account meaning you'd need to register with Adobe.
