A lot of Kindles sold on eBay are blacklisted or has not been unregistered. You are taking a risk that the Kindle you buy will not be able to be registered.

Local thrift shops not so much as you can return it. However, I see it being rather difficult to find a PW5 at a thrift shop. Also, you don't know the condition of the battery. You cannot ask the previous owner how good the battery is.

IO just checked with Goodwill online and there are not PW5s. Also, you now have to bid instead of just buy. When I last bought from there, I just had to buy and not bid.
