Your issue sounds as if you are having a database corruption issue. You might want to try rebooting your KLC before connecting to calibre to ensure the database is properly closed before the connection and making sure you safely eject (either from within calibre or under Windows, using eject from a right click in File Explorer. Do not use the USB widget in the system tray. Some people have reported that if they wait after the safely eject until the connected and charging screen disappears this keeps them from getting database corruption.
