Follow up
I never did get it to work consistently. Basically, I try different ports, combinations of hubs and directly plugging in to the computer, and cables, and restarting until it shows up. I can't find a pattern. What worked last time doesn’t necessarily work the next time. It might be time to move on but it is still perfectly fine as an eReader.
