The plunger was purely for my wife's benefit. My experience has been that when the RGP is not on the pupil any of the regular removal techniques did not work; neither the pull on the corner of the eye, or my preferred one which is to push down on one side of the lens.

The plunger also let her slide the lens more easily than using her finger in the eye.
