The eink is good enough now for capacitive. I've had/have two or three IR touch. I'd sooner give up the light pipe layer which reduces sharpness and brightness; the capacitive touch only reduces brightness a little.
The IR is poorer resolution as the screen gets bigger, thus the worst was the Kobo H2O original and best is the Sony PRS-350 (assuming it is IR).
The capacitive touch screens have been good enough with ambient light since Voyage / PW3 / Oasis 1 (all 6″), if the light is good enough to read paper.
No touch is OK until you want to search or highlight or navigate. Then it's a pain.
