There is no chance whatsoever of returning to a sensible "50 years from publication, or life of author, whichever is longer" or to either of your suggestions.
The best that can be hoped for is a return to life+50 years, because of the vast number of signatories to the Berne Convention, which specifies this as a minimum, but even that seems very unlikely.
