Are you sure that this thing doesn't have other modes?
Like turn it on while pressing some button combination?
Many of these things have the characteristics programmed in an EPROM. I've often reprogrammed them for other keys and especially device name. OTOH, changing a "mouse" button to a key might take some effort.
