For reading comics, find a tablet that caters to the gaming crowd. I use a Chuwi Hi9 Air 10.1 inch that has 2560x1600 resolution. My husband complains that the comics I read on it look better than his physical ones. I also use a (very old) programme called ComicRack that lets me do reading lists of different books. (Think crossovers and things). I use that same tablet for picture references when I'm painting minis.

Anything else, I use a Kobo Forma on, and I sideload all the stuff from Calibre. I'm not sure where your pdfs would fall under, but from the title of the plumbing one, it might be better on the tablet. I've also used that for things like maps when I'm playing RPGs.

I haven't yet seen a colour eInk screen that would give the resolution needed for serious comic reading. Manga, on the other hand, is great on my Forma.
