I am seeing something a bit different.

I picked a recently added book from Project Gutenberg (The old house, and other stories by Blanche Sellers Ortmann) for testing. It shows two Kindle formats: Kindle and older Kindles. The first is KF8 format with a .mobi extension. The second is MOBI V6. Both show that they were created using calibre version 4.17.0. Neither is dual-format.

The MOBI 6 file works properly when sideloaded to the "documents" folder of my Colorsoft via USB/MTP.

However doing the same with the KF8 file pops up the Unable to Open Item dialog. But this happens because the non-working file as delivered by Project Gutenberg has the wrong file extension for its format. Changing the extension of the KF8 file from .mobi to .azw3 allows it to function properly on my Colorsoft. I experience the same behavior with this file on a Kindle Paperwhite.

I could not duplicate this. After it failed to open I was able to remove the book using the Remove Download choice from the device's UI.

As another test I downloaded the EPUB3 version of the same book from PG and converted it into an actual dual-format MOBI file using Kindle Previewer 3. Once sideloaded that functioned properly on my Colorsoft.
