While the delayed shipping might be a response to complaints and the need to respond to an unanticipated rate of return, it also might be just a marketing ploy, a planned shortage to encourage people to purchase early in the ramp up to holiday sales.
What I have trouble believing is that a software upgrade can fix the yellow strip issue, so delaying shipments on that account doesn't make sense.
I can have gadget lust, but I've never felt the need to be an early adopter and this brouhaha is a case in point. Why not wait for a second run? Short of a pressing need to replace a dead device, why not get along on what has served reasonably well thus far? Certainly I'd wait on the first sale, because I'm cheap that way.
