The exclusion line for the Kobo eReader.conf needs to be added to the Kobo eReader.conf file in the Kobo directory inside the .kobo directory. I would recommend doing this as your first step. If you are using Linux on your Chromebook, any editor should allow you to do so otherwise, I'm not even sure a Chromebook without Linux supports any editors.
You will need to copy the KoboRoot.tgz file into the .kobo directory on your ereader. The .adds folder can be copied to your Kobo as is. The icons folder along koreader.png and kfmon.png can be copied to the root of your Kobo's exposed storage.
Once you safely eject, your Kobo should install the KoboRoot.tgz (usual updating screen will show). Once that has completed, you should see NickelMenu and it's hamburger icon in the bottom right hand corner of the screen.
For my uses, I use NickelMenu to directly launch KOReader and Plato so I do not need the 3 images files or the icon folder.
