There are various ways to get the books on a Kobo wirelessly, yes. The downside (for me) is that you'll lose series grouping and automatic collections, but this may not be important to everyone, especially the users of third-party reading apps.

OTOH, the USB ports on my two 13-year-old Kindles still work (I charge them regularly) and I doubt I'll be reading on my current Kobos a decade from now. Chances are I've bought something newer long before that.
