I don't remember any series of books from when I was young. But there were some notable individual books. The first half-dozen to come to mind are:

Stig of the Dump by Clive King
The Land of Green Ginger by Noel Langley
The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien
The Just So Stories by Rudyard Kipling
Five Children and It by E. Nesbit (OK, and its sequels)
Way Station by Clifford D. Simak

And one short story sticks in my mind.
"Sally" by Isaac Asimov.
