I have fond memories of reading the Moomin books as a child. Quite delightful.

Other series I loved (and still reread occasionally) include C S Lewis's Narnia, JRR Tolkien The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, and of course Arthur Ransome's Swallows and Amazons
