The way you've said it is a bit confusing.

If you have a pre-2024 Kindle registered to your Amazon account, Download & Transfer via USB (D&T) works. If you only have 2024 Kindle(s) registered to your account, D&T will not work. So as long as you keep one older Kindle, and do not trade it in for a discount, you'll still be able to use D&T. Just make sure you keep at least one Kindle Keyboard (aka K3) (and no earlier Kindles), you'll be good.

As for side-loading, I'm thinking it could just be a matter of adding the new 2024 Kindles to calibre's Scribe's MTP driver.
