I have a very large number of books in my Unread (= your To Be Read) collection - well over 200 - so I use a slightly more sophisticated approach. In addition to the Unread collection, there is a Partly Read one (usually with about half a dozen or so books in it). As I read books, they get moved from Unread, to Partly Read, and finally to Read. Obviously, this requires a bit more administration than your approach.

I haven't come across the Reading List plugin. It sounds interesting, so I'd better look into it.
