I'd venture to say that the deprecation (and degradation) of flash commands in abl is part of the movement to fastbootd in recovery. I believe this is driven by Google?

We're in the future here, folks. Using old software is a bit of a dead end. Admittedly new software is more spin than something that is valuable to you. But it has the potential to be fixed either by the OEM or by hobbyists.
