Download & Transfer via USB is available for my Scribe. One caveat is that I’m running firmware 5.16.9, which is not the latest version; MTP was however introduced in version 5.16.3, so my Scribe does use MTP.

I don’t think MTP is the issue, seems to me more like a deliberate move by Amazon to phase out Download & Transfer via USB.
