Um, I don't remember/forgot/never knew what the problem with this was.
The best way to deal with updates is to let it deal with the updates.
If your device boots normally, put the upx in /sdcard and make it install it.
If your device can do recovery you can try sideloading it.
But I don't know what your status is and don't know what kind of update you have.
