I do the same, and would also find having more recent books showing on the home screen useful. However, there are problems with this, because the available space in the upper half of the screen is limited.

Reducing the size of each thumbnail is one theoretically possible solution, but my view is that four is a sensible upper limit - especially with the small screens that I favour.

Another possibility would be to allow left/right scrolling of the recent books. But the response time of the e-Ink screen is poor. Kindle offers this sort of scrolling, and my view is that it's unusable. The utterly awful Kindle Home screen is one reason why I gave up on them in favour of Kobo a few years ago.

TBH, I think that Quoth's solution is the best available.

I don't know if it's possible to write patches that'd increase the number of recently read books on either the home screen or the drop-down tab. Giving the option to users like this would be great: we could choose whether or not to use them. I'd probably use it for the drop-down, but not the Home screen. However, AFAIK none (yet) exists. Writing them is way beyond my own capabilities.
