I do not require buttons, but have recent PocketBook and Kobo devices. PocketBook has a much friendlier to third party content ecosystem, has TTS for both apps and devices, and I like the way they do buttons (4 of them, with customizable actions). There if and when I find it comfortable or convenient to use them.

My Kobo Clara Colour has no buttons and I do not think I would find the ones with buttons comfortable. They look very much like Oasis's, which I never found comfortable. And I did not like having to flip to change hands. You can side load, but it does not become part of your library. I'm using it mostly for library borrowing; those do merge with your Kobo library.

I have not tried library borrowing with PocketBook but creates an Adobe ID that is shared across devices and apps registered with your PB account so it should be possible to side load or download .acsm file with the browser, and that will get added to PB cloud for the borrowing period.

In terms of purchasing ebooks, Kobo has a USA storefront and PB does not. PB doesn't have a credit card on file for me so I don't even know if it is possible to purchase and presumably it would involve currency conversion to do so. Not a problem really and I've removed the Store icon (no hack needed) so there is nothing resembling recommendations, which I like. Kobo is a lot more like Kindle in that the Store and recommendations are always there.

Both support AZW3 (DRM free) but I always convert that to ePub (or KePub in case of Kobo).
