Firmware images are not a good way to update a Kobo. Most of them are out of date since you need to have the device on hand and be willing to open it up and remove the µSD card to create an image.

Unless the internal µSD card is having issues, you should be able to download the latest firmware updates from Patrick Gaskin's Kobo Firmware Downloads, extract the contents of the downloaded .zip file, connect your Kobo to your computer using a USB cable, copy the upgrades directory and KoboRoot.tgz and manifest.md5sum files to the .kobo directory on your Kobo and then safely eject it.
