So far I love my Colour Kobo. What about you?

Annotations with the pen on epubs end up as paired jpg and svg images in .kobo/markups , the jpg is the image of the page, the svg is your scribble. It doesn't matter if the epub was sideloaded or not, or if it is epub or kepub. I don't know if these are backed up to the cloud for cloud books. I'm sure there is a database entry that links the filename to the book or something, but I didn't look for it. The filename looks like a uuid.

Non-pen annotations (bookmarks, highlights, notes) can be exported to a text file which you can copy. I think calibre can also back those up separately with the annotations plugin, but it can't restore them. Integration of this could be better probably.

I have to admit that I feel a little adrift in a sea of confusion in regards to your posts. I haven’t been hanging out here very much lately because of life issues, so I may have missed a post or two that explain where you’re coming from.

I already acknowledged your comments on PDF annotation, I thought. Maybe I dreamed it. 😆 When I annotate a sideloaded book on my Elipsa, none of those annotations show up on my KLC, and vice versa. This is what I’m referring to in regards to cloud syncing. When I experience a database corruption and have to restore my Kobo device, annotations for sideloaded books are never restored from the cloud. I have to restore them from a back up I’ve made. This is the same for the KLC as well as Elipsa. It is why I covet sideloaded book support on the Tolino.

Has Kobo changed things recently? When I made a backup restoration error on the KLC last June and reformatted the device from scratch, I lost all sideloaded book annotations. The lack of sideloaded annotation support is one of the aspects of these devices that user Quoth has complained about quite frequently as a dealbreaker, as well as the lack of ability to export those annotations in epubs. It’s one reason why I happily annotate Kobo purchased books, but I’m reluctant to annotate sideloaded books. Quoth sees it as a waste of time, and I can’t say that they’re wrong.

Regardless, I do love color annotation with my KLC, especially at the price I paid. Have you folks seen the reMarkable Pro? It also supports color eInk, but at a price that’s over $500.
