While restart was happening I retrieved a spare keyboard from my 'junk box'. On returning I was surprised to find I didn't need it, not sure what prompted me to try a restart.

It could be that something got corrupted and to fix it the system it needed a reboot. I know in a Windows system it often takes a reboot to get things working correctly, such as during the process of installing programs, since there are many configuration files that are only read when the computer boots up.
I had something happen with my old flip phone. Suddenly, it started acting strangely and had trouble doing many normal things. Then I figured out that I had been using it for years without ever shutting it down. Shutting it down, and then restarting it fixed the problem.
