I would think the issue for Amazon is whether the kindle is contributing to overall profit.
If they're losing money on Kindle sales, do they nevertheless drive enough additional book sales (i.e., over what they would sell without Kindles) to more than make up for the loss. Even if Kindles are profitable, are they sufficiently profitable to be worth the resources used, including management attention.
