One item to mention is that solid is not a valid CSS in an ePub 2 document (CSS 2) though it is allowed in an ePub 3 document (CSS 3). However there was a discussion a while back where the WebKit based renderer used for kepubs would only show a thin underline. Solid would cause the underline to disappear.

You may want to configure calibre to convert to ePub 3 by default.
