That's never been much of a concern for me since energy usage still compares very favorably with backlit tablets. I've never used any front-lit eReader with light level turned to zero. Energy consumption is not a big issue and I would not consider it much of a drawback either.

Reading on a greyer screen under a very bright light (e.g. outdoors on a sunny day) can be problematic however, as in that case the frontlight is useless. As much as I like my Libra Colour, I do not enjoy using it outdoors, as the contrast is too low.

I was hoping Gallery would be better from that standpoint, but indeed it seems we might have to wait a long time!
