Back in the early days of e-reading, when green phosphor monitors were king, and palm pilots were the pinnacle of mobile tech, I'm sure I spent two or three dollars on a CD-ROM full of PD text files, stuff like Sherlock Holmes and various classics. It was a lot easier than downloading them from dial up BBS systems, and probably cheaper than the phone bills. I even read a couple of them. That was the only time, I think.
