We're probably going to adopt a cat from an organization that rehomes pets for people who move house and for whatever reason can't take their pet with them. My sister want to get a male cat (we've only ever had females) because, according to her research, those tend to be cuddlier than female cats.
When we wanted new cats previously we wanted two that got along, so the shelter put us on a list for that. When they called us they got two kittens that were up for adoption together they told us that we might not want them because they were black, so apparently black cats are also harder to find homes for, even when they are kittens. We didn't care and adopted Luna and Maru. Who are, btw, very happy in my parents' new apartment.
I'm really looking forward to getting a cat, I just miss having one around.
