And it was a big six or big five or whatever they are now - big publisher - book...

I think you still need to accumulate 300 points to earn a reward and the reason you were able to redeem 199 points is because you had 448 points on balance.
When I went to a book page, it showed a balance of 257/300 pts and a message of: "You're only 43 pts away from a $3.00 reward".
