It was the movie The Wizard of Oz (1939) that had talking trees; in the book the trees (not apple) were sentient guardians of the enchanted forest, but they while they could move their limbs and see and hear, they couldn't talk.
Many tweaks in the film, including the ruby slippers which were silver in the book.
