This (literally, just opening Calibre in safe mode) seems to have done the trick. I did have to log into the account I normally use rather than the admin account I booted from. I was able to view books in safe mode, and I could also view them again after returning to normal mode.

I did not change anything or uninstall software. I literally just opened Calibre in safe mode, viewed a few books, and returned to normal mode.

Another data point: I could view books in my admin account all along, even while viewing was broken in the non-admin account I normally use.
