But, then my books won't be in subdirectories for each author... I have read thousands of fanfics in my life, and plan to read thousands more with this ereader. Since I started reading on this ereader I've read about a dozen stories and have more than 100 queued and ready on my ereader, and I want to keep them all on my ereader, like my personal digital library, and not having folders for each author sounds like a nightmare...
Trust me, it's fare from a nightmare. Think of it like calibre where the eBooks are stored behind the scenes. The thing is, if you do change the author name then send that to your Kobo, you create another copy of the book and another directory. When you finish reading by that author, you delete all eBooks by that author, you end up with an empty directory and eventually lots of empty directories.

It's a lot easier to just put your eBooks in one directory. I called mine books. It's a lot less clutter when you do to look at your Kobo's internal storage on your computer.
