Looks like my current eInk device (Kindle 11th generation, sold as kids edition) is also eligible for the upgrade, so I am keeping in airplane mode.
Googling, I’m seeing many mentions of this upgrade causing problems, and I also see some mentions in Paperwhite customer reviews at Amazon.com. I guess Amazon will react eventually, but it seems a big enough embarrassment that you’d think a well-managed company would be getting out front to set expectations for a fix.
