I just fell for this bug. I purchased a book on Amazon and wanted it on my kindle (obviously) and turned off airplane mode and all of a sudden the device freezes up as if it's was doing stuff in the background. I thought nothing off it until the device went back to normal but I realized that all my books that I had sideloaded had just vanished. I check the kindle files on my computer (USB) and my suspicious were right, Amazon had just wiped my entire library.
So sad that Amazon is (obviously) ignoring this issue. I had over 300 bookmarks and notes saved. Good thing I have a good practice of backing up things and I had exported all my kindle notes to my computer. Now I just have to backup the entire kindle device and never take the damn thing off Airplane mode again.
