That was fun yesterday.

Earlier this week they started work on a nearby section of highway. From Monday morning until Thursday 9pm some/most lanes are closed and from 9pm Thursday until 5am on Monday it's fully closed. Add to that there are several other road (partial) closures (both on local and highways) in the region. Yesterday was the first Friday the road was closed, it was raining all day and with one week left of the summer vacation you get a lot of traffic.

Around 11.30 I went to the tram stop, which is next to a road leading to the said highway and there was a long traffic jam. When I got back two hours later it was even worse, with people blocking both the T crossing for cars and cars blocking the pedestrian crossing. On the local facebook page people were uploading pictures and films showing the chaos throughout the town. With cars driving over cycle lanes and going through cycle tunnels. There was a lot more traffic in the neighbourhood, with cars driving too fast and honking at other road users.

The chaos made national news. Some people were stuck in traffic for up to eight hours. The council deployed people to help get traffic moving again/get people to behave. Around 9.30pm it was reported that everything was back to normal, but there was a lot of neighbourhood traffic until 11pm.

These roadworks are going to take until the end of September and there are five weeks of weekend closures. The council will meet up with the agency that has planned the road works on Monday to "evaluate" the problems and to see if they can come up with a solution. Since it's already predicted that as the summer vacation is at an end it will get worse every weekend.

I had planned to get my TV installed on Friday the 30th, but I think I'll request it for the 2nd instead, because if they don't find a solution for the traffic jams they won't be able to reach my neighbourhood I'm afraid.
