Usually, the standard/easy way to get root is with Magisk.
You can pull the boot image from either an update or directly off the device using EDL.
Then install the Magisk app, use it to modify your copy of the boot image.
Finally, install that copy using EDL.
The procedure is basically the same on all Onyx.
Just look at the thread on Poke5.
