Not quite sure what you are referring to with the basic reading speed? A quick Google search for studies comes up with the majority stating that longer lines are linked to higher reading speeds. Oddly, most of the studies also show that there is a wide variance between the line length where people read the fastest and the line length they feel most comfortable with. That's an interesting find. Whenever I 'researched' this topic in the past, (research meaning Google Search), line lenghts of over 80 characters were found to be detrimental. That's the neat thing about science though, always evolving. I don't think I would sit on any conclusion there anymore.

As for my no truth comment, I think you misunderstand me. I'm not saying someone's preference is not true. I meant that someone's preferences has no relevance to apply to someone elses. Because someone likes 40 character lines, does not imply any reason that should also be the case for someone else.
