So uhhhh very awkward story. Around an hour after I posted this, the books actually showed. Apparently I tried getting them to show up for an hour and I was so worried, and turns out I just had to wait lol.

FYI to answer your questions I use mobi, and I use Calibre's send to device function. But still, all of this has convinced me that the Kindle may become too old for this stuff or Amazon is cooking something to make it harder to enjoy free ebooks.
