Well, technically that is not Kobo reading the series, that is Calibre doing the work for Kobo.
That's why you need to connect the ereader twice, because first Kobo needs to read the book information and create an entry in the database for the book, once you connect the ereader a second time, Calibre finds that entry and fill in the missing information.
