This is bad advice: If you aren't wanting to buy Kindle ebooks, then don't buy a Kindle. If you are buying a Kindle for that reason, then it makes sense to register it:
1) Makes it easy to remove DRM from Amazon Kindle Download.
2) Needed to sync to and app or another kindle.
3) Needed for Scribe to work properly
4) Needed for collections
5) Series info only on jailbroken or from Amazon.
6) Needed for KU (though personally I won't pay a sub to Amazon to borrow ebooks, our library is free and I prefer to buy)

Don't assume a Kindle can be jailbroken, and other makes don't need a jailbreak.
