Has anyone seen behavior like this? I'm not doing anything especially unusual on my device, although I do have NickelMenu installed and don't keep WiFi always on.
Any ideas for fixes/workarounds?

I noticed the same. The Battery drain was obvious, even shocking that I would sit down for a read and Kobo would say Charge Reader.
I find the standard Kobo software good enough. I am able to sideload fonts and with Calibre books. The only reason for Nikel/Koreader was to wifi-drop in epubs via dropbox. But too fiddly. besides
https://send.djazz.se does that so easily.
I tried to uninstall Nikel/Koreader. but drain was still there. Reset the device to stock and now can happily read at lenght on charges.
