Eink is the limiting factor, it's 100x slower to 300x slower than LCD or QLED or LED. There has been a minuscule improvement in last 10 years.

Colour eink will not get better. Kaleido is a 4 year old system that could have been done earlier. It's coloured dots on a mono eink screen.

ACeP is brighter for secondary colours and white, but poorer for primary R G & B and after nearly 10 years about 10 times slower than regular eink. The primary R G & B is dimmer because it's subtractive cyan, yellow and magenta. Quality paper printing uses more than that, using 8 to 30+ colours and black. Only the cheapest poorest quality printing is just four inks (or four toners for laser, which is using 1200 to 2400 dpi dithering and does dark primaries).

The only future for eink is dedicated mono ereaders and price tags.

Kobo have made a bad error dropping the 7″ mono model.
