Indeed, like the Agatha Christie JSWolf mentions. Christie died in 1976 so won't be PD until 2047 in most of the western world, but some of her early books are now PD in the US because they are more than 95 years old.
And Conan is out of copyright everywhere except the US, where some later stories are still protected.
I think there's another wrinkle where if something is out-of-copyright in its country of origin, it is out of copyright everywhere, but that doesn't help with the above examples.
