Thanks for all the valuable feedback. It was a setting in the Kobo Touch extended driver that needed changing. I'd had to do a Calibre re-install about the same time as the Kobo update, and hadn't looked to see if anything had changed in the plugin settings. In fact, I didn't even know that the culprit setting existed.
Now to figure out why the wifi has become non-connectable!
