The 90tish % of "matte" screen protectors are only diffusing the light inside but have a high gloss finish. You can easily see it looking at an angle.
Sure, the amount of reflected light is a sum of light reflected from the surface of the screen + light reflected from the bottom reflective layer of the screen. However, the approach taken by the majority of the "matte" screen foils is dumb, they only aim to reduce the deep reflected light which makes the image dull but still expose light reflection from the surface
