Jon, for someone who seems to feel knowledgeable about language to make the comments you have made on multiple occasions, you seem to have missed on many of the differences in word usage. For instance, a torch in the UK refers to what you would likely term a flashlight
and a flame on a stick. Do you consider calling the lid over your car engine and a head covering a hood to be sensible?
Given the poster shows France as their location, looking up lampe de poche (what I learned in school French) in a French/English dictionary says torch, flashlight with pointers to torche électrique, lampe électrique and lampe-éclair as alternatives.
