It has to do that to transition from Lock Screen image to whatever was displayed when it locked. So all the pixels go 'white' for an instant. But I do not see the front light flash on and off (when I turn it all the way down).

It's unlikely to be behavior that update affects at all.
When I turn on Scribe with power button. Backlight turns on for a few seconds, then it turns to my backlight settings as they were when I turned the device off. If I have backlight set to max warmth, max brightness, it'll first cycle to low brightness - cold light setting, then back to my max warmth setting. Or if I have backlight turned off, it'll first turn on the backlight to the same low brightness cold light, then turn it off again.

Also, this only happens when the device comes out of 'deep boot'. If 'deep boot' is disabled, this never happens. When I just turn it off and turn it on again quickly, it also doesn't happen. As far as I know, Scribe doesn't go immediately into 'deep boot' when button is pressed. I don't know how long it needs to be turned off to go into 'deep boot', but when it comes back from it, it always takes longer compared to 'quick boot'. It's certainly more than just a few minutes.

I just don't remember it doing this when I bought it. I've now updated to 5.16.9, and it still works like this.
